Senator David Burns

Senator David C. Burns is currently serving his second term in the Maine State Senate. He represents the people of Senate District 6, which consists of all of Washington County, as well as Gouldsboro, Sullivan, Winter Harbor, and a portion of the East Hancock Unorganized Territory.

Prior to being elected to the Senate in 2012, Senator Burns served two terms in the Maine House of Representatives. He has served as Chair of the Government Oversight Committee, a member of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee, a member of the Judiciary Committee, and will serve as co-chair of the Legislature’s bipartisan Aging Caucus during the 127th State Legislature.

During the 127th Maine Legislature Senator Burns will be serving as Chair of the Judiciary Committee, as well as returning as a member of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee and the Government Oversight Committee.

A resident of Whiting, Senator Burns was a Maine State Trooper for 24 years before retiring in 1994 as a sergeant of detectives. Much of his state police career was devoted to investigating major crimes. Following his career with the Maine State Police, Sen. Burns worked as a private investigator. He also spent seven years running a program for children who have been exposed to violence and trauma.

Senator Burns and his wife, Donna, have five grown children, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Two of their sons are state troopers.
